The brief for this project came from the International Society of Typographic Designers, the task was to create a publication following one of the supplied design prompts that would be evaluated based on its use of expressive type and type hierarchy. I chose to follow the “Biophilia” prompt, so my project had to demonstrate a love of nature and a defined relationship between nature and humans.

I grew up in a very environment-oriented household and have always had a strong relationship with nature, my mother went to great lengths to introduce me to these things. I find that sustainable living within an urban or suburban lifestyle can be challenging for those that haven’t had a nature-driven upbringing. I wanted to create a publication that simplified a handful of sustainble living practices and presented them in an approachable and friendly way. Because of my mother’s role in involving me with eco-friendly living, I humored the idea that sustainability seems inaccessible to people because they didn’t have a nature-focused maternal figure. To remedy this and create the approachble vibe I wanted for my publication, I used my mother’s handwriting as a typographic element, her notes and comments about each of the four topics covered in the book are featured alongside the traditional type content, guiding the reader through the subjects.

The things I learned while desiging this piece were extremely rewarding and something I’m incredibly grateful for. This project was also a very good opportunity for me to learn more about the printer’s perspective, managing page numbers and printing specs while creating the digital project was new to me and I learned a considerable amount from that. While my project isn’t perfect, there’s nothing I would go back and change, every part of the design process taught me something new and different, skills I can take with me onwards to new endeavors.
